INTERVIEW: 1-on-1 with Team Penny sophomore floor general Alex Lomax

By Alec Kinsky, D1 Circuit, 04/13/16, 10:30PM CDT

Gatorade Player of the Year.

AAA Mr. Basketball.

AAA State Championship game MVP.

Yep, safe to say it's been a good 2016 so far for Team Penny's Alex Lomax.

Then you remember he's only a sophomore.

The 5-foot-11 floor general was light out for Memphis East in 2015-16, sweeping the awards while guiding the Mustangs to a state title under the tutelage of Penny Hardaway.

It's rare that a prospect has the same coach for high school and grassroots, and it's virtually impossible to have that person be a 13-year NBA veteran. It appears that Lomax hit the jackpot, and we caught up with the sophomore star to get his thoughts on a variety of topics.

Alec Kinsky: First off, how does it feel to be Mr. Basketball?

Alex Lomax: It’s a great accomplishment, and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my teammates.

AK: Definitely hard to do as an underclassmen. What do you feel you do best on the court right now?

Lomax: Right now, I make all my teammates are happy and just make sure they can get their game off. Whatever role coach wants me to play, that’s what I’m going to do.

AK: How awesome is it to have Penny Hardaway as your coach, essentially year-round?

Lomax: Greatest feeling in the world. To know that I’m learning and actually getting the right type of work.

AK: How’s his coaching style? I know guys love playing for him and he has a very laid back demeanor on the sideline.

Lomax: He knows everything about basketball and he is laid back, but he knows how to get the job done. He has definitely gotten my game better.

AK: Do you take pride in representing in your city?

Lomax: Yes, I represent my city and my neighborhood.

AK: How’s your team looking this year?

Lomax: My teammates are tough but underrated. We all got something to prove as a team and we’re unselfish.

AK: When did you know you were destined for success in basketball?

Lomax: I’d say 5th grade.

AK: Anyone coming at you hard in recruitment?

Lomax: I don’t think so, but if so, my coaches wouldn’t want me to lose focus.

AK: Excited about the EYBL?

Lomax: Yeah I’m glad I’m about to experience this. It’s going to help me.

AK: Any hobbies outside of basketball?

Lomax: I’m more of a chill person. Like to go to movies or out to eat. Like go kart racing and stuff like that.

AK: How many hours a day do you spend in the gym?

Lomax: At least four hours.

AK: Any specific goals for this summer?

Lomax: Really, I just want to win.

AK: Any pregame music of choice?

Lomax: Maybe some Yo Gotti, Drake or Future.
