Tyrese Maxey is officially off the board.
The 6-foot-3 junior pledged a commitment to Kentucky this afternoon, giving head coach John Calipari the 13-ranked recruit in the 2019 class (247 Sports).
Maxey is fresh off a First-Team All-Indianapolis honors, and also just took home Offensive Player of the Session. He's enjoying a tremendous junior EYBL campaign, averaging 24 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists & 2.9 steals through seven games.
Kentucky Assistant Coach Tony Barbee took the lead in Maxey's recruitment, who was choosing between UK, Michigan State, Michigan, Texas and Oklahoma State. Maxey had an in-home visit with Calipari on April 15th.
Pat Lawless caught up with Maxey about his commitment to Kentucky, whether he'll stay in the 2018 or 2019 class, and his impending recruitment of fellow top prospect James Wiseman.
Q: Why Kentucky?
Tyrese Maxey: Because I feel like it’s the best opportunity for my family and me.
Q: Will you be 2018 or 2019?
Maxey: I will stay my senior year (2019). I decided to stay because i wanted to enjoy my last year with my friends. And you only have one senior year.
Q: What does Coach Calipari like about you and what has he said to show you fit in at Kentucky?
Maxey: He just likes my game and my character on and off the court. And he says everyone isn’t built for Kentucky, but he feels like I am ready, and so do I.
Q: Last question - you and James Wiseman have a close relationship. When are you planning on talking to him after you commit and what will be your message?
Maxey: Yeah me and James are cool. And I probably will start my recruiting tomorrow (laughs). But my message to him would be follow his heart to be honest with you. But I hope his heart is in Lexington!
